Below are some of the questions frequently asked by my patients:
Q: What will anti-wrinkle injections do for me?
A: Anti-wrinkle injections will treat the wrinkles that form due to the over use of facial muscles. Many people try anti wrinkle creams, which fail to give the desired result. Anti-wrinkle injections are the only effective way to eliminate stubborn frown lines or crow’s feet etc without resorting to surgery.
Q: I’m not sure it is for me, can I come in for a consultation first?
A: Yes, all our patients have a free consultation first. At this visit we take a complete medical history and examine the areas that concern you. We can then give you our best clinical opinion as to what anti-wrinkle injections can achieve for you. We will answer all the questions you have and address any concerns. In some cases, a patient will not be suitable for this type of cosmetic treatment, and we will advise them at this visit. It also gives you a chance to meet the team and see our practice. Even if you are sure anti-wrinkle injections are for you, we recommend you go away and have a think about all the information you have been given at this consultation before making your final decision.
Q: What kind of people chooses to have anti-wrinkle injections?
A: Our patients range from mid 20’s to mid 70s. Some are regular attendees and have been coming back for years, others wish to look their best for a special occasion – for example a bride who doesn’t want her make up to sit in creases in her skin on her big day, or someone who wants to treat to themselves before a significant birthday. We treat everyone from those who want to look their best on the school run, to patients in the public eye who need to look good in photos and on TV.
Q: What areas can be treated?
A: Anti-wrinkle injections are primarily used to relax muscles in the upper part of the face. If you have horizontal lines on your forehead or wrinkles inbetween your eyebrows it is possible to either eliminate or vastly reduce the appearance of these using anti-wrinkle injections. Crow’s feet can also be treated.
Q: How do anti-wrinkle injections work?
A: Anti-wrinkle injections relax the muscles in the treated area, as a result the skin stops being creased allowing these lines to fade or disappear completely.
Q: Are there any side effects?
A: Unwanted side effects are rare. However, in a small number of cases some drooping of the eyelid or eyebrow can occur. These episodes are usually of a temporary nature. Bruising and/or swelling on the injection site can also sometimes occur. A full list of possible side effects will be explained to you when you attend your consultation.
Q: Are anti-wrinkle injections safe?
A: Yes, absolutely. Anti-wrinkle injections have been in use as a medical product since 1978. They were initially used for patients with muscular spasms, migraines etc. This type of cosmetic treatment is a firmly established medical product with three decades of evidence and history to support its use.
Q: Is the product used a toxin?
A: Yes – however, there is a difference between something being a “toxin” and being toxic”. The product in question is used in such small diluted doses that it is in no way toxic.
Q: How long does the appointment take?
A: Normally, the appointment where we administer anti-wrinkle injections takes 10 minutes. We take some pre-treatment photos, answer any questions and administer the product.
Q: Does it hurt?
A: Our patient constantly comment how gentle the procedure it. Diabetic needles are used to administer the anti-wrinkle injection, the same needles that diabetic adult and children inject themselves with every day. A slight prick can be felt, but it is no more uncomfortable that having your eyebrows waxed/threaded.
Q: What can I expect afterwards?
A: The areas we have injected will be a little red for a few minutes, but this usually settles within 15 minutes. The full effects of treatment can be seen as early as 4 days and will take up to 2 weeks to reach maximum results. We review every patient after 14 days to make sure that the treatment has met their expectations and they are happy with the results.
Q: How long will results last?
A: This varies with every patient. The first time you have an anti-wrinkle injection results will last approx 4 months, gradually wearing off during this time. For the first couple of years, normally treatments every 4 – 6 months are recommended to maintain the look and re-educate the facial muscles. After this, the treatments required will become less frequent with some patients attending just once a year.
Q: How much does it cost?
A: The initial consultation and review appointment is free. Treatment cost between €200 to €400 depending on how many areas are treated and this will be outlined during your initial consultation.
Q: What are dermal fillers?
A: As we age, a substance in the skin called Hyaluronic Acid reduces, leaving the skin looking thinner and more wrinkled. Dermal fillers, which are composed of Hyaluronic Acid are an excellent way of reversing the aging process.
Q: How do dermal fillers work?
A: Dermal Fillers smooth out folds and wrinkles in the face by adding volume. The product is injected through a fine needle into the area being treated so that the wrinkle is lifted up and smoothed out.
Q: Is it sore?
A: No. We use a local anaesthetic to completely numb the area before treatment so the procedure is 100% pain free.
Q: Is it safe?
A: We only use the highest quality products on the market. The products used are gold standard products with a very low incidence of allergic reaction.
Q: How long does the treatment take?
A: The treatment usually takes about 15 minutes, but may be longer depending on how many tubes of product we need to use.
Q: What can I expect afterwards?
A: Most patients experience a little swelling immediately after the procedure however, this usually settles very quickly.
Q: What are the risks?
A: In a small number of cases, side effects such a bruising and swelling can occur, however, this usually resolves after a number of days. Allergy is also possible, but rare.
Q: How long does the treatment last?
A: Depending on the product it can last anywhere between 6 and 12 months.
Q: What areas are dermal fillers used to treat?
A: Normally dermal fillers are used to rejuvenate the lower part of the face – lost volume around the cheeks, a down-turned mouth, deep creases around the nose and chin etc.
Q: How much does the treatment cost?
A: The cost will vary depending on how much product we use. Our average cost per patient is €400.
Q: How do I know if I am suitable?
A: All our patients who are interested in having dermal fillers will attend a free consultation. At this visit, you will be assessed for suitability, the expected results will be discussed with you and the cost and side effects are also outlined. If you are happy to proceed, then a separate treatment appointment can be made.
