IDA welcomes confirmation of dental care as an essential service under Level 5 restrictions

  • Dentistry remains open for business throughout the country
  • Patients and dental staff can travel more than 5km to attend for treatment or work
  • ‘It is critically important that patients do not defer appointments’

Tuesday, October 20th, 2020.  The Irish Dental Association (IDA) has welcomed the Government’s confirmation of dental care as an essential service, and has reiterated that dental practices will remain open throughout the country during Level 5 restrictions which come into effect on Thursday, October 22nd.

It has also been confirmed that, as a designated essential service, patients and dental staff are permitted to travel more than five kilometres to attend a dental practice for treatment or for work.

Speaking today, Fintan Hourihan, CEO of the IDA, said: “Since the emergence of Covid-19 in the spring, dentists have proven that they can treat patients in a safe and effective manner. We welcome the Government’s confirmation that dental care is an essential service, as it is a crucial part of a person’s overall health.

“Dentists will continue to risk-assess each patient to ensure the highest safety standards are maintained, so it is critically important that patients do not defer appointments as this may cause unnecessary healthcare issues.”

Some other questions that you might have:

What happens if I need emergency dental treatment before May 18th?

In the meantime we are currently operating an Emergency Clinic in our Roxboro branch from Monday to Friday 10am-Midday providing a range of emergency dentistry services including same day tooth removal, repair of fractured teeth and emergency pain relief.

What if I live more than 5km from Bowe Dental Clinic?

A dental appointment is an allowable excursion outside of the 5km radius as it constitutes essential travel as designated by Government. If you need an appointment, wish to discuss your treatment or just need advice, please don’t hesitate to contact us on 061 608 186.

Will I be charged extra for emergency treatment?

Our fees remain unchanged and we are absolutely not charging a separate emergency or call out fee. We also continue to see private, PRSI, medical card, and health insurance patients as normal.

What if I am nervous or unable to come into the clinic?

If you have any concerns or are unable to come into the clinic Dr. Bowe is also available to give advice to his patients over mobile and there is no fee for this service. Please call the clinic to request a call from Dr. Bowe.

What about non-emergency treatments?

As mentioned above, Bowe Dental will be fully re-open for all dental treatments on May 18th. Please phone or email us to schedule your appointment.

Patient Story – Paddy

Paddy is a man in his 60s from Co. Clare who came to see us 6 months ago.

He was having major trouble with an upper denture, his lower teeth were failing and he thought they looked awful.
He said “I have been to a number of dentists and dental mechanics and although they tried their best I just wasn’t able to comfortably wear any denture that they made”. He informed me that “They are always loose; food is getting in underneath them and it’s getting embarrassing at this stage”

He had heard of dental implants and didn’t know if they would suit him, but his wife encouraged him to find out his options. Paddy told me that he didn’t want “doggie dentures” or the Hollywood smile. All he wanted was for them to be “presentable, comfortable and tight”.

After listening to Paddy’s wishes I assessed and scanned him. All the options were explained and after thinking about them for a few days Paddy decided to have dental implants.

I saw Paddy recently for his check up in our Roxboro clinic. His upper teeth are tight and stable, and he told me that he is very happy with the results. He said “I’m really glad I went for the treatment. The implants are great and in fairness it was much easier than I expected. I just needed a bit of paracetamol and I was grand.”

Thanks very much to Paddy for letting us share his story and photos! 😊

Patient Story – Anne

When Anne first visited our clinic she was frustrated. She had been wearing a denture for many years and had been told elsewhere that it was her only option. When we saw her we listened to her concerns which were that her denture was unsightly, it was loose, and food was getting in underneath it. She wanted to know were there any other options. We initially CT scanned Anne and used implant simulation software which showed us that implants were an option at Bowe Dental for her.

Now 5 years down the line, Anne came in for her routine check up. The implants are functioning wonderfully and she is delighted. Anne said “This is the best thing I’ve ever done. I forget they’re not mine, they feel like they’ve always been there. Thank you to Dr. Bowe and his team at Bowe Dental Clinic.”

Patient Story

This young man came to see me recently. He had fallen as a child and broken his front teeth. Some of the teeth were capped and he had a tooth crown also. He is a young healthy farmer in his 20s and was recently struck by a gate whilst working. The blow resulted in his front teeth being catastrophically damaged. The remaining roots needed to be removed and the previous crown was also damaged.

We were able to help him by replacing the damaged crown and replacing the lost teeth with dental implants. These photos show the final result. I am particularly pleased with this case as the teeth look very natural – I always want to make them look like “they grew there”. The patient was very pleased with the results. He is a man of few words but said “It’s brilliant, thank you.”

When people ask me why I do dentistry – This is why!
